How to Clone Validation Rules in Salesforce Using BOFC

Recreating validation rules from scratch across multiple Salesforce orgs is tedious and error-prone. If you’ve ever had to manually copy a complex error condition formula — field by field, rule by rule — you know how painful org migrations and sandbox refreshes can get.

BOFC’s Clone from External Org feature for Validation Rules eliminates that busywork entirely. Here’s exactly how it works.

What Is the Clone Validation Rules Feature?

BOFC lets you pull validation rules from one Salesforce org and clone them directly into another — or into a different object in the same org. No Setup navigation, no copy-pasting formulas, no risk of missing a rule.

Step-by-Step: Clone Validation Rules Using BOFC

Step 1: Select “Clone from External Org”

Open the BOFC Home > click Manage Validation Rules. Under Select type of operation, choose Clone from External Org.

Open Manage Validation Rules in BOFC

Step 2: Select the Source Org

In the Select Source Org dropdown, choose the org whose validation rules you want to clone. If you’ve already connected external orgs via Manage Org Details, they’ll appear here alongside your current org.

Select the Source Org

Step 3: Select the Target Object

In the Select Target Object dropdown on the right, pick the object in your current org where the cloned rules should land — for example, Contact.

Select the Target Object

Step 4: Enter the Object API Name and Fetch Rules

In the Enter Object API Name in Source Org field, type the API name of the object in the source org (e.g., Account). Then click Fetch Existing Rules.

BOFC will retrieve all validation rules on that object from the source org and display them in a table — showing the Validation Name, Error Condition, Error Message, Error Location, and more.

Step 5: Clone the Rules

Review the fetched rules. When you’re ready, click Clone Rules. BOFC will clone the selected rules into your target object, and the Rules Status column will update to show “Rule Cloned Successfully” in green.

That’s it — no manual formula entry, no Setup back-and-forth.

Why This Matters

  • Faster org migrations — move validation logic between orgs without touching Setup
  • Safer sandbox refreshes — replicate production rules into a new sandbox in seconds
  • Cross-object cloning — clone rules from one object (e.g., Account) into another (e.g., Contact) when the logic applies to both
  • No copy-paste errors — BOFC reads the rules directly from the source org’s metadata

Clone Validation Rules is part of BOFC’s full Validation Rule management suite, which also covers Create, Update, Delete, Export, and Compare across orgs — all from a single native Salesforce interface.
